Impromptu Charity Stream for Moore, OK

Hello, we’re a bunch of artists drawing together to raise money for Moore, Oklahoma. The damage is still being counted, but we can start helping now. As artists, we’re raising a bit of money to the Red Cross and other charities in exchange for drawings and sketches.

Come join us, and if you can draw too and know your way around tinychat you’re more than welcome to offer your services. If you’re just looking for drawings, then now’s your chance to get some art from some very awesome people. All proceeds are to be directly given to the charities. We want as few middlemen as possible, so your help goes to the best equipped to do so.

If you’d like a drawing from one of our artists, chat to see who’s available and who’s willing to fulfill your request. Once agreed to, please make a donation to the Red Cross (or any other related charities) and place it in honor of the artist. The Red Cross allows you to put in their e-mail address which confirms for the artist your donation. And then the artist will draw for you!

It’s simpler than it sounds! But it’s all put together rather quickly with duct tape and good will. Please join along. We all just want to help.

Gluten Free Cinnamon Cornbread

1 c cornmeal

1 c AP GF Flour (I used GF Pantry)

1 Tbsp baking powder

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp salt

2 eggs, beaten

4 Tbsp butter, melted and cooled

1 c milk

Pre-heat oven to 400 F

Combine the cornmeal, flour, salt, cinnamon and baking powder in a medium bowl. Create a well in the middle and pour in eggs, butter, and milk. Whisk gently until everything is combined and moistened. Pour into a greased cake pan and bake 20 minutes or until a knife inserted comes out clean. Simple and incredible. Add a drizzle of agave nectar over the top.

I've always wanted to make my own Star Trek show

What that show was about changed as I got older and came to understand more and more about what Star Trek was supposed to be.

As I was born in 1986 my first taste of Star Trek was sitting next to my dad and trying to wrap my head around the myriad concepts being presented to me.

My father did no explaining and I did no asking. He wanted whatever came from watching this to be my own interpretation and not just an echo of his own thoughts. Well that’s what he says, more likely he was probably just happy I wasn’t interrupting the story.

But still. I had Star Trek action figures, I had a shuttlecraft that made all the noises from the show and I had wooden blocks to simulate alien planets.

I suppose in the long run, playing in the gap between the wall and my bed, blocking the view of anyone in the doorway to my tiny private world is why I write now with such a passion.

Oh I started this post talking about what kind of Star Trek show I wanted to make didn’t I?

As a kid, I was all about the crazy space science fiction action… Fighting monsters with ray guns and all that malarkey.

But I grew older, Deep Space Nine and Voyager danced into my view and I began to learn about more than just that. The thrill of adventure and discovery in the unknown, the dynamics of other societies and histories, birthing a facination with the study of cultures from across the world.

And then I came to notice something as Enterprise came on the air.

The openings. It was all music.

Where was it? “Took seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.”

It was missing.

Enterprise sank into a pseudo Dominion War, which worked for Deep Space Nine as a sort of intergalactic Casablanca that sat in the midst of the conflict and acted almost as a watchtower over all these sprawling events, effectively robbing us of all the chances we could have had to simply explore the beginnings of a universe at large that my father had grown up with.

That’s the show I want to make.

In the episodes of The Next Generation titled “Who Watches the Watchers” and “First Contact” we get closer glimpses into the reasoning of the prime directive and the steps taken to assure introduction to a universal way of thinking or just scientific research is safe for both sides. The show I envisioned would focus on a crew dedicated to finding these first contact worlds, studying them, getting to know the people there and building bridges for a better tomorrow.

There would also be world of historical significance, living through pages of our own history in their own ways and what that comes to mean in the grand scheme of things. You’d follow pioneers, the chart makers and star namers, the first to map out the way in an unexplored section of space.

I say that because despite all the anomolyus things encountered by the Crew of the Enterprise, they always seemed to have a heading, a named destination known to them. Sure that’s probably deep space probes and long range scans… But isn’t there room for a small quick ship with a tightly knit crew of about thirty just pointing in a direction and flying blind for the sake of the credo “To explore strange new world, seek out new life and new civilizations and boldly go where no many has gone before.”

… I realize the special effects budget for something like that would be enormous for a weekly program… I’m willing to explore animated alternatives so long as the level of writing remains unchanged. I’ve cooked up a lot of workarounds however and I think this could work.
